Notebook Highlighter

Privacy Policy

Notebook Highlighter is offline-first. Highlights, notes, bookmarks, saved reader copies, reminders, images, AI chats, and settings stay on your own device unless you explicitly turn on an optional feature that sends data to a destination you chose.

Overview

Notebook Highlighter is designed for web and PDF annotation. It stores highlighted text, page references, notes, tags, reader-mode copies, saved images, reminders, chat history, and user settings inside local browser storage so the extension works without sign-up or a developer-run backend.

What the extension stores locally

Local browser storage may contain highlighted passages, page URL and title, notes, tags, bookmarks, article snapshots for reader mode, saved images, reminder schedules, optional AI conversation history, and settings such as API keys or custom sync tokens entered by the user.

What NHR Soft collects

Nothing by default. NHR Soft does not operate a server that receives Notebook Highlighter data. We do not receive your reading history, highlights, notes, bookmarks, or API credentials. The extension does not include analytics, telemetry, or advertising trackers.

Optional AI summary and chat

If you enter an API key, the extension can send the current page text, your highlights for that page, and your chat messages to the AI endpoint you configure. The default endpoint may be https://api.openai.com/v1, but the user may set any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, including one they host themselves. If you do not enter a key, no AI request is made.

Optional sync and export destinations

If you configure a custom sync endpoint, the extension may upload or download your backup file to that endpoint. If you use Notion export, the exported material is sent to the Notion API using the token you provide. Markdown, HTML, PDF, Obsidian, and local share flows are generated on-device unless a chosen integration requires network access.

Why broad website access is requested

The extension asks for access to websites and local PDFs because a highlighter cannot know in advance which page you want to annotate. Page content is read only to capture the text you selected and to reattach saved highlights when you revisit that same page.

Deletion and control

You can remove highlights, notes, bookmarks, and reminders inside the extension, clear Chrome extension storage, export your data, or uninstall the extension. Removing the extension deletes its local browser storage from that Chrome profile.
